A lot of my friends are having babies right now...
so, after making myself a fabulous pair of "Monkey by Cookie A." socks, i decided to create a smaller version for the munchkins who have recently been welcomed into the world around me.
Size: newborn & toddler (foot length is adjustable)
- any fingering weight yarn (superwash preferable); 1 skein (is more than enough for 1 pair)
- set of 5 US#2/2.5mm DPNs
- marker/safety pin (optional)
- tapestry needle
Gauge: 7.5sts x 10rows = 1 inch in stockinette
K2tog - insert needle through two sts, as if to knit; knit sts together
YO2 - yarn over twice
Ktbl - knit 1 st through back loop
Ssk - slip 2 sts as to knit, insert left needle into front of both slipped sts, knit sts together
P2tog - insert needle through two sts, as if to purl; purl sts together
Lace Pattern (worked in the round over a multiple of 10sts) -
Rnd 1: K all sts
Rnd 2: [P3, k4, p3] to end
Rnd 3: [P2, k2tog, k1, yo2, k1, ssk, p2] to end
Rnd 4: [P2, k3, ktbl, k2, p2] to end
Rnd 5: [P1, k2tog, k1, yo, k2, yo, k1, ssk, p1] to end
Rnd 6: [P1, k8, p1] to end
Rnd 7: [K2tog, k1, yo, k4, yo, k1, ssk] to end
Rnd 8: K all sts
Repeat rounds 1-8 for Lace Pattern.
Twisted Rib (worked over an even number of sts) - Rnd 1: [Ktbl, p1] to end of round
Every round is the same.
CO 40 sts. Divide evenly between 4 needles (10 sts on each needle) and join to begin working the round, being careful not to twist. After a few rounds have been worked, place marker (optional) to show start of round.
Work in Twisted Rib for 1/2".
Work rounds 1-8 of Lace Pattern 3 times.
First set-up row: K10, turn work so WS is facing
Second set-up row: slip1, p19 onto one needle. Heel flap is worked b&f on these 20 sts; remaining 20 sts on hold for instep.
Row 1: slip1, k19
Row 2: slip1, p19
Repeat these two rows 8 more times. There will be 9 slipped sts along each side of the heel flap.
Working yarn is currently at center of heel; this will be beginning point of round for rest of sock. When working Round 1, needles will be designated Needle1, Needle2, etc. They will retain these designations through remainder of sock.
Rnd 1: Using Needle1, k remaining 6sts of heel flap, pick up and knit 10 sts along edge of heel flap (1 from each slipped st & 1 between heel flap and instep sts); using Needles2&3, k20 instep sts (Row 1 of Lace Pattern); using Needle4 pick up and knit 10 sts along edge of heel flap, k remaining 6 sts of heel flap. (52sts - 16 sts each on Needles1&4, 10sts each on Needles2&3)
Rnd 2: K6, k8tbl, k2tog; work round 2 of Lace Pattern over sts on Needles2&3; ssk, k8tbl, k6.
Rnd 3: K to end Needle1; work next round of Lace Pattern over sts on Needles2&3; k to end Needle4.
Rnd 4: K to last 2sts of Needle1, k2tog; work next round of Lace Pattern over sts on Needles2&3; ssk, k to end of Needle4.
Repeat Rnds 3 & 4 until 10sts remain on each needle.
Continue in pattern as set, working sts on Needles1&4 in st st and sts on Needles2&3 in Lace Pattern until work measures approx. 1.5" less than desired length, ending with row 1 or row 8 of Lace Pattern.
Rnd 1: K all
Rnd 2: K to last 2sts on Needle1, k2tog; ssk, k to end of Needle2; k to last 2sts on Needle3, k2tog; ssk, k to end of Needle4.
Repeat these two rounds until 16sts (total) remain.
Using Needle4, k to end of Needle1.
Slip sts from Needle2 onto Needle3.
Graft sts on Needle3 to sts on Needle 4.
